What is Zakat / Zakah?

HRF has been distributing Zakat to the needy since 1991. Donate your Zakat safely and securely with us.

Zakah is one of the five pillars of Islam.
It is an obligation amongst all Muslims wealthy enough to pay it.

If you are a Muslim, sane adult and you own the minimum amount of Nisab required for one whole year then you must pay.

ZAKAT

Zakah must be paid on gold, silver, merchandise for owned businesses, cash in bank account, cattle and crops. You must pay Zakah on these items if they have been in your possession for a year. You do not have to pay it on personal items which do not bring you wealth E.G your car, clothes, shelter or food.

Many Muslims choose to pay their Zakah during the holy month of Ramadan, when blessings are multiplied, but you can pay it at any time of the year.

There are eight categories of people that Zakah money must only
be spent on. These are;

Fuqaraa: People who have some wealth, but not enough for basic needs.
Masakeen: Persons of extreme poverty who possess no wealth whatsoever.
Aamileen: The people who collect Zakah to distribute to the poor.
Muallafatul Quloob: People who are sympathetic to Islam or wish to enter Islam and are needy.
Ar-Riqaab: To free a person from slavery.
Ibnus-Sabeel: A traveler, who, whilst wealthy at his residence, is stranded and in need of financial assistance.
Al Ghaarimeen: A person whose in debt and unable to pay it off.
Fi Sabeelillah: Those who are away from home in the path of Allah.

ZAKAH AT HRF

HRF has been distributing Zakah to the needy since 1991. Your donations can be attributed to any one of the countries we work in and will go most often towards helping those living in poverty. Every year Human Relief Foundation uses thousands of pounds worth of Zakah money to help thousands of people in Iraq, Palestine, Pakistan, India, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Jordan.

You can choose which country you would like to allocate your Zakah to. You can also choose whether to attribute it to orphans, widows or the elderly. If you select General Zakah Fund, then you are trusting Human Relief Foundation to give your donation to the neediest people at that time.

Human Relief Foundation is particularly dedicated to helping orphans, widows and the elderly, so it is likely that your donation will go towards supporting these people through donations of food, water, shelter, medication or clothing.
