World Mental Health Day 2026 - Iraq

This World Mental Health Day, observed under the global theme “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” Human Relief Foundation Iraq is sharing a simple but powerful reminder: taking care of your mind is just as essential as taking care of your body.

Over the last four years, the Human Relief Foundation has been privileged to support more than 6,000 individuals across Iraq. Among them are returnees and families navigating difficult security and social challenges, from Nineveh, Kirkuk, and Salah al-Din to Karbala, Anbar, and Diwaniyah. HRF Iraq has delivered a wide range of mental health support, including:

• Rehabilitation of governmental clinics, carried out in coordination with the Iraq Ministry of Health

• Individual counselling

• Family sessions

• Peer support groups

• Dedicated trauma recovery programmes

These services have made a profound difference. For many people, they have meant the chance to overcome suicidal thoughts and begin rebuilding their lives. Behind every number is a person who found someone willing to listen, and a path toward hope.

Real change is now taking shape. Thanks to stronger partnerships, generous donors, and a growing shift in how mental health is understood, HRF Iraq is seeing progress across the country. The Scientific Council for Psychiatry has noted major advances in psychiatric care nationwide, and the social stigma around seeking help is finally beginning to break down.

Healing is a journey no one should walk alone. HRF Iraq invites everyone to keep supporting one another, to listen with compassion, and to help normalise mental health care for all. When lived experiences are heard, real change follows.
