Day by day, as time passes us by, we find ourselves lost in the humdrum of the often monotonous daily routine that is life. Sleeping, rising, praying, eating, drinking, working, learning, and so on and so forth.
But did you know that while we go about our own business, in ignorant bliss, there are places not too far away from us where millions of people are engrossed in a despairing search for food and warmth for their families during the cold weather? This is a sad reality for many around the world.
Occasions such as Ramadan and Qurbani serve as a great reminder of the world food crisis, but world hunger is not just limited to these special occasions throughout the year, it continues all year round for many millions of people across the globe.
Lack of food and valuable nutrition is the cause of many diseases and deaths around the world, and can even affect unborn babies if the mother is under-nourished. These babies are often born with stunted physical growth and lack of brain development.
This leaves many millions vulnerable to health conditions from birth, increasing the risk of infections due to weak immune systems and subsequently leading to lifelong health problems.
Here are some starvation facts from around the world that may just shock you.
- Over four million children under the age of five die every year due to lack of food and starvation
- Lack of nutrition is one of the biggest factors of physical and mental underdevelopment
- Starvation is responsible for more deaths than diseases such as Malaria, TB and AIDS
- Almost 800 million people worldwide do not have access to sufficient or secure food to lead a healthy life
In observance of World Food Day this year, which is held annually on October 16th, let’s work together and try to provide nourishment to as many of those suffering from starvation as we can.
By raising awareness of those who are in less fortunate circumstances than ourselves, we can extend our support and attempt to make a difference in the lives that are affected by this issue.
Be it a regular monthly amount, or a one-off contribution; big or small; your donation can make a huge difference to so many lives.
