Muneera Jamir fled from the conflict in Syria over 2 years ago; she currently lives with 6 other family members in a one-room hut. The hut is made out of thin sheets of wood and cloth.
During the winter family members becomes sick as the hut doesn’t shelter them from the cold. Muneera suffers from arthritis and high blood pressure.
The hut has no electricity or any means of lighting and the family try to sleep before it goes dark and wake up as the sun rises.
Muneera fears having to need the toilet in the night, as the camp is to dark and she feels unsafe to walk around at night.
“The lamps will help me see my beautiful grandchildren at night now, they have been scared of the dark since fleeing Syria."
The solar powered lamps will provide enough light for up to 8 hours; gaining power by harvesting sunlight.
Muneera said: “The lamps will help me see my beautiful grandchildren at night now, they have been scared of the dark since fleeing Syria – it gives me so much peace to know that small fear is now gone.”
The lamps will also enable Muneera to generate a small income, by charging mobile phone users a small fee and letting them charge their phones using the lamp.
